Have had the chance to buy back a bass that you have really regretted selling?

I was just wondering if any of you have had the chance to repurchase a bass that you regretted selling???

About a year ago I sold my 2006 Stingray in natural because I secured a Sabre Classic. That was fine, the Sabre was amazing. I then wound up selling the Sabre Classic because the only tone I really liked or needed was number 5, the "Stingray" position, and it was worth a lot of money.

After selling the Sabre, I tried and tried to find a Stingray that I liked, going through about 7 Music Mans & Sterling ray 24/34s. I like VERY low action, and every single one wouldn't setup low or had some sort of neck/fret issue where they would buzz with low action. The only one that ever felt right was my 2006!! At the time, I swore off Stingrays and concentrated on my Fenders (which always setup perfectly).

Lucky for me, last week I was browsing Reverb and saw a really nice natural Stingray, a 2006. After checking it out for about 15 second, I realized it was the same bass! My bass!! The guy still had it, and it was still in the same condition. Of course, I bought it back right away (had to stretch some funds for sure) and it's on the way to me right now.

SO LUCKY!!!

so have you received the bass yet from the seller?

I sold a black Alleva Coppolo LG5 in 2018, bought it back in 2019, sold it again in 2023 and bought it again in June, 2024. I'm the first, third and fifth owner. It's the only bass I've bought more than once.

Not exactly the same, but I sold a compressor pedal on FB marketplace and the guy was kind of unsure about the purchase so I told him to try it and if he didn’t like it I’d buy it back.

Well sure enough, he got in touch the next day and wanted his money back. True to my word we met and made the exchange.

It’s funny that I came across this thread because I actually just sold that compressor again earlier this week. I hope the new owner enjoys it, and perhaps I get a little good karma for my efforts.

Nah, no egrets here.

I’m still looking for “mine”…. I’ll even take a random one so long as it’s the Ibanez SR506 in Translucent Teal from the mid-1990’s…

NO. If I'd wanted to keep it, I'd have never sold it, much less back-track later and buy it back? Uh-uh. There's WAY too many other basses out there I might want next time.

They're fun, wonderful tools, but I don't get any more sentimental or soul-searching about them than I would my Snap-On socket set or an Estwing hammer. I learned the hard way to never get emotionally attached to basses or most anything else that money can buy. You value people, not things.

I just also purchased a pre Special Stingray (2015) and it was shipped today. Can't wait until it arrives.
Did you get it yet? What color?

Mine arrived and is just as amazing as I remembered. Mint condition and beautiful. I had my guy file the nut just a little bit and now it sets up even lower than before (around 2.5/64ths at the 12th fret) and plays absolutely perfectly. I installed extra light Chromes, my first attempt on a stingray, and they are such a great match. Just enough tension for the style I play and the sound is exactly what I hear in my head when I think “disco/funky stingray”. No finger noise, no fret buzz. An absolute dream bass.

Not yet… but if someone bought a used MIJ burst/tort/rosewood Jazz from a music store near the Ohio State University campus around 1997-1999 and wants to separate a nostalgic fool from his money, you know where to find me. ;)

My preferences in basses have totally changed since then (I’m a P guy now), but I still miss that one. And to think I let it go for something stupid like “rent” or “food”…

I bought a red 89 Stingray from a forum member. Not sure if it was here or the Dude Pit. I played it for years. The guy i bought from passed away. I think it was my first on line purchase.

I sold it to a member maybe of that forum I believe with the request that he would let me know if he ever was selling it and to give me first dibs. He did just that and I bought it back.

Years later I just convinced myself that a passive Jazz bass was a better fit and I sadly sold/traded Stingray again.

As I look back on it the Stingray will probably continue to go up in value and it had a great maple neck I loved.

But I don’t imagine I will have the opportunity to buy it a third time.

I would buy back the Lakland Joe Osborn I sold and definitely buy back the sunburst 62 Jazz I sold.

I’ve never had a bass I really didn’t like. Dang looking at that pic I want it back aaaaargh
