FREE Software Thread - Utilities & Applications You Cannot Live Without

Like I said it's already included in Android. At least with the Samsung phone. You can see it on the top left. My phone is in French it's called "ne pas déranger" or do not disturb in English. You can set it manually every night or automatically. And the phone number on your favorites list will get through. Screenshot_2015-10-11-17-26-45.png

Hello Yvon, my night-working friend says it's not included in his Android - its a 5S, and it's a Samsung. I haven't looked at his phone myself, but he says it's not there. BUT...I'm looking at my App Store (I have an iPhone) and I see several apps called Do Not Disturb. Two of them are games so that can't be the one. Another one is by "Bitcot", and another one is by "Component Studios". By chance, is one of those the one that you have? If not, who publishes the one you like? Thanks in advance...

I just saw your file attachment. As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words! Thanks so much, you've been most helpful.

I have an app like that on my Droid RAZR M running Android 4.1.2. For me, it is an app built into the OS called SmartAction. I can tell my Droid to do certain tasks based on time, location, and other variables.

One of them I set up is to block all calls/texts from everyone but my wife, parents, and kids from 9:00PM until 5:00AM.
When I worked in an office outside my home, I told it to go into silent mode all of the hours I was at the physical location of the office.

Thanks, Mike. I'm going over to check on my friend today after he wakes up - I'm going to check into both the Do Not Disturb and Smart Action apps, to see which one will work best for him. I sure appreciate your help, guys.

No idea if these have been mentioned yet...

InkScape - vector graphics
Scribus - desktop publishing. A good alternative to word processors for flashier posters or programmes
git - great for versioning your songwriting, QLCPlus shows, etc. It allows you to branch, merge, tag. It's handy if you have to vary set lengths and want to manage things effectively (e.g. you change a 45 minute set to a 30 minute one, but then change a song in the 30 minute set and want to merge that back into the 45 minute set).
QLCPlus - DMX lighting tool with video and audio support
MuseScore - tadpole and telegraph editing for those to whom those things make sense
OpenOffice Draw - can be used to do connection diagrams for your connections to mixers, etc
Eclipse, Gaphor, etc - You can repurpose UML component diagrams to also create connection diagrams, and saving in XMI works well with versioning with git.

According to the search it's not in this thread:evidently the search is not too great, given #326 (at least) mentions it:

MuseScore (free notation, Mac/PC/Linux - the current Mac version (2.03) at least, lets me do pretty much everything I ever used Finale for at a much more attractive price, that being free, not $600+. Actually I used Finale Allegro, but Finale killed that and wanted me to upgrade $$$ to full Finale. I passed. I'm fairly sure Finale NotePad (mentioned on first page) is no longer free, too.

I'm also kinda fond of DaTunerLite, but that's an android app (free).

And ForScore, but that costs $10+tax and is iPad only. But wicked neat, especially if more than one in the band has it and you use the cue feature.

Back to computer apps: Libre Office and Gimp have pretty much removed the need to buy MS Office and PhotoShop. They were rough early, but both are now polished enough to be functional replacements. Libre is a fork of Open and was actively developed for several years when Open was moribund/abandoned, and still has the edge. And of course good old Audacity for recording.

Just a note, I've been making extensive use of PortableApps for Windows. It allows you to run apps from a directory or USB drive, without affecting the system registry or files. All of the apps are open source. I often work at a lot of different PC's, and want access to my utilities without having to mess up their system. Also, because these are all stand alone apps, you can trash your PC and quickly re-install your apps just by copying the PortableApps folder.

Thanks for the info. Which apps do you use?

I found some here: Portable Applications for Windows - Free downloads and reviews - CNET Download.com

The big one is Notepad++, just for looking at text files and having a place to store a data dump. I also keep a copy of Chrome on there, in case the computer I'm working on doesn't have a satisfactory browser with my favorite security plug-ins. All of the installed plug-ins go with you when you carry the file folder somewhere else.

I get everything by letting the PortableApps app download and install additional apps from their site.

In a similar vein, the same USB drive has an installation of WinPython, which is my electronic lab notebook and general swiss army knife.

Thank you!

Oh cool, someone else who digs Notepad++.
I had a developer from the software company I used to work at introduce me to it years ago. Been using it ever since.
