I am absolutely certain now that my favorite bass is...

My newest bass.

I give up.

Don't anyone ever listen to me again when I recommend, review, or praise a bass. What I say means nothing. I love all basses. My favorite bass will always be whatever bass I just bought. End of story.

And I wish I were joking.

As some might know I just picked up a brand new MIM Fender Jazz. I brought it to a gig today, and I was in complete heaven. Got every sound I wanted, played effortlessly, was punchy, fit perfectly in the mix, balanced excellently, bla, bla, bla, bla.....

10 years ago it was a Bongo. Then it was a Stingray. Then a Big Al. Then a 2013 Gibson EB. Ahh.... then I was in love with my Antigua Jazz for a while, but didn't talk about it cuz I had trashed Fender for so long I was embarrassed :). Next ---my Rickenbacker--- I couldn't shut up about that one. Can't use it now because they don't make a hipshot for it, and I need a hipshot with my new band.

A few months ago I picked up a Caprice. I've been doing cartwheels with that as if feels nicer than any bass I've ever laid hands on. Then gas hit again when I decided I needed a black Jazz bass.

This jazz bass is unbelievable. And it will be my favorite bass until the next bass.

And then that will be my favorite bass.

My favorite bass will always be my newest bass. This I realized today.

The end. Well... the 2nd end, as I ended this up above in the 3rd line.

Anyone else in this boat with me?

You hit all the big ones but no mention of Spector.

......and GO!!!

Pretty common, and if it were a club I would be a charter member.

I've only switched over to bass about 2.5 years ago, but have been through it with both amps and basses.
-MIM Marcus Miller - WOW (traded)
-MIJ Aerodyne - WOW (still have)
-2011 Am Deluxe Jazz, after a pickup swap to DiMarzio Model J's - WOW (still have)
-1973 P Bass, 2nd owner - WOW (gone)
-2009 P Bass - WOW (still have)
-2016 Magnificent Seven PJ - WOW (traded)
-ruby red Ric 4003 - WOW (still have, but on the block)
-2016 Geddy USA - WOW (current co-#1)
-Old Smoothie - WOW (current co-#1)

Guess what, the last 2 are the most recent in. Oh, you knew that?

-have a G&L L-2000 on custom order, should show up on G&L Instagram about any day now, it is gonna be .......yeah, WOW, almost certainly.

And sure as heck there's a couple more in there, I had a 4003S but returned it, a Blacktop Jazz that I totally modded and still have, I know there's another J in there I'm forgetting. I have a D800, a SuperBassman300, a MiniMega, and an RB400-IV, though 2 of them are on the block locally. I think I've found 'my voice' with the Subway (though I gas for the +) and the GK.

I went through the same thing with guitars and amps and pedals since the early 90's. I keep thinking I have landed on the magic combination, my GAS cools for a while, then I get 'oooh! shiny!' syndrome, and here we go again. Nothing unique about my experience, or yours. I know I am fortunate to have an indulgent mrs keto, and the financial wherewithal to do this, I count my blessings as I count my basses.

Really wasn't expecting this much of a response :). Had a good feeling I wasn't alone though.

I quoted a bunch of posts in here that I was going to respond to, then switched to my computer and they for some reason disappeared :/. Will read through the thread again when I get a chance... just want people to know I'm not ignoring them.

I do want to add that I do often buy basses that I don't like at all, and they either go immediately back where they came from, or get sold off quickly. I don't ever write about them though cuz I see no reason to trash basses that others love. I used to do that but then I think I grewed up a little :).

At 13 basses & counting, I think I helped build the boat we are "in".

I have a somewhat different problem. After years of rotating from bass to bass. Brand to brand. I fell into an American Standard Jazz bass about 4 years ago that has become my be all end all of bass's. I not only bonded with it but it with me.

Had a gig last Thursday night and with just one of my 410 cabs and my Mesa D-800+ I found tonal bliss and sat in the mix so perfect I thought I was in heaven instead of a crappy little bar.

Since I found this bass I have tried to find another that plays and sounds so perfect.

So far I have failed. My Jazz just keeps delivering what I need. And the more I play it the more it seems to become a part of me.

I'm scared.

What if I can never play another bass other than this one ever again?

Oh I'm trying. Sam Ash, Guitar Center and every little mom and pop shop within 150 miles of my home. Even "Bass Central" witch is only 90 minutes from here has nothing that speaks to me.

And they have everything!

Alembics, Sydowskies, Foderas(I probably spelled something wrong there but I'm on my phone).

I'm hopelessly bound.

But I'm in love with my Jazz. And I don't see that ever changing.
Joel, you know what? I have several basses including a 2012 American Standard in OWH... this one is perhaps the bass that I have played less for various logistical reasons, but when I think about a bass I'd like to play or to surely keep my thoughts go invariably to it... it is so simple, comfortable, nice and lightweight ...
