It is clear that something is horribly wrong with me.

Recognition of good gear is the result of good marketing. You know the stuff works and the community around it supports the gear (bass, amp, pedal, ect.) People stick to that route because they can get a "safe" return if it doesn't work out for them.

However, then you have the gems out there. The unsung hero's. The gear that didn't get a fair shake (no marketing, eclipsed, didn't sell well, or just legit bad) and it's totally cool to explore and revisit.

Some of us folks have been to the top of the mountain with primo gear. Testing, playing, buying helps us determine true value and appreciation for our craft as a whole and not just the brands or talking heads. Talkbass give us a "safe space" to offer opinions, sell, and exchange concepts and ideas.

The good stuff will always stay good. I say it's time to sail uncharted waters.

Lately I find myself having buying urges that I've never had before, and probably shouldn't have. Ridiculous things, like I'm currently wanting an Ibanez Ergodyne 5 string bass ....something ive never even come close to desiring. I'm not sure ANYONE desires the Ergodynes. What's next, a 7 string with a tremolo ? o_O

I'm pretty sure I need counseling. :rollno:

Hopefully this will pass.
Nothing wrong with you other than being bored with what you own!
Bassists are a lil ca-ray-z when it comes to gear!

Don't do anything silly, and the insanity will past! :roflmao::D:roflmao:;)

Been there, done that, got it out of my system.

With this:

Just buy it, play it, sell it, and get it out of your system.

It's the only way to free yourself.

And trust me. I understand.

I have an Ergodyne 4 string (one of the super weird looking ones). My g/f picked it up at a swap meet.

It certainly has a different sound than any other bass I have played and is light as a feather with a super-skinny neck but...

I can see shimming the neck is probably coming and since they are made of fancy particle board or something, I don't think you can do much work on them like you can on a regular wooden bass. I could be wrong.

So... proceed with caution.

I've shimmed the necks on all 3 of my EDA905s with no problems. The previous owner of my orange one used a huge washer as a shim. I replaced it with wood.

I agree that not much can be done with the bodies if they get damaged. A few years ago I bought a silver one with a broken lower horn from a TBer. I couldn't pass it up at the price he was asking and figured I could use it for parts if nothing else (the piezo pickup wires under the saddles break easily and it's impossible to find replacements). My guitar tech said there's no way glue would stick to the body material. He reshaped it into a scoop and I repainted it. The bass plays perfectly fine, though one of the pickup wires later broke.

At the moment, the space bass (previous owner painted a space scene on the front of the body) is my main player in a bluegrass duo. Even though I'm normally not a fan of flatwound strings, I put a set of GHS Precision flats on it. If I use only the piezo pickups, I can get a decent imitation upright sound.

Obviously I'm an Ergodyne fan, but they aren't for everyone. My short fingers like the Ibanez Ergodyne and SR series neck profiles and I particularly love the "weird" shape and light weight of the 905 bodies. However, I also have an EDB405 that weighs at least 10 pounds. I don't play it and probably should sell it.

No! No! No! Do you need a sponsor to talk you through moments of weakness? A player who also builds the cool instruments you do should never even consider such purchases! Just the Dark Horse decal alone you put on that P bass is way cooler than the instruments you listed in your original post

Try this level of GAS and obsessiveness... my band is starting to do some smaller clubs and bars, open mic and the lot, to tune up our live presence. We're wanting to take a smaller drum kit. And since we kind of tackle these things as a band, rather than just leave it up to the drummer, or whomever to figure out...and being the gear junkie that I am...I started looking at compact drum kits. Did not even know these were a thing. And now I'm obsessed with building a great sounding compact drum kit with a 16" tom to kick conversion...etc. etc.... and the punchline...I don't play drums.

So I would at least say that your GAS'n in bass world!
You sir, are our kind of people!
