Jason Aldean on SNL

Is it just me hearing it wonky or was Jason Aldean singing flat on his SNL Petty tribute?
It kinda hurt my ears.

Interesting you bring this up because I thought he was flat through most of the performance. I don't know anything about him so can't say if this was normal for him or an anomaly. I would assume anomaly.

At least he wasn't autotuned. :)

I only listened to the first verse, but when he went for the highest note in the melody he was definitely flat. The rest of the melody sounded like he was on pitch. Kind of a strange quirk, I've heard other singers with this issue.

As an aside, singing like Tom Petty is not as easy as it might sound. In my better days I could come close, even nailed the inflections, but not so much as I get older. We have a TP tribute band here in town, and the singer is really struggling, I hate to say he's almost the weak link. TP was deceptively musical and pitch-accurate with his delivery (long before Auto-tune was even a thing). You can really appreciate it when someone tries to cover his music.
