NAD: QSC has killed my need for bass amps

Has anyone compared the CP12 and the K10.2 for similar use?

I’ve got the K10.2, which sounds great for bass; but, it just doesn’t quite get to SPL levels that give me confidence for stage monitoring. I ALMOST took it to my last gig, but left it home at the last minute, due to lack of confidence. One of those “close, but no cigar” moments.

Recently, he turned me onto this super portable setup that he has been using for years. Instead of using a backline or hauling an amp, he throws his bass on his back, a preamp in the bass bag pocket, and runs it all through a QSC CP12 speaker/monitor.

The CP12 is 1000W of full range sound. No internal filters like many bass amps. So the louder it gets, the better it sounds. At least, that is what I just experienced playing through this portable beast. Not too shabby for 600-bucks!

This is very intriguing. I currently use in-ears for vocals and some of my bass signal and run a small amp and usually a 2x10 cab for some on-stage rumble and monitoring for the band. This kind of simplifies things even more. What do you have the contour set to on the back when you play out?

Interesting to hear the K10 is recommended for bass. I would have thought the K12 would be better. I just inherited a K10 (not the 10.2) and I was going to try to sell it to get a K12 but maybe I'll give the K10 a try first. It would be supplementing my Magellan 800 into two Bass Array 112 cabs so I won't need the K10 to do too much heavy lifting.

These are great but in a small setting it would not work for me.. just not enough power or presence. Our keyboard player uses a QSC 12 and it sounds great.

Agreed. I was initially really excited but that was quickly shot down when I got to a rehearsal (had it for 1 day and returned it).

Would be great for a mellow band or for a monitor on a stage with PA support but it’s certainly capable of replacing my Mesa rig.

I wish our keyboard player would get a different amp..I can hear the QSC but I can’t feel it..if that makes any sense..

What do you do when you dont have PA support (ie a small venue where there is no room for PA subs) Do you bring a regular bass amp?

This is the issue for people who sometimes show up to the gig without knowing for sure how the situation will be. I still use a combo (Traynor SB115) with a wedge to tilt it back towards my ears for this reason. It's loud enough to carry a smaller room if need be, but more often than not it's just a stage monitor. If I were a big enough deal that I always knew how the FOH situation would be, I might go in the direction of the OP.

You really got that thing to pump some low end? I've played a couple stages recently where I didn't have my full direct rig (ears only), and I didn't bother to bring the amp. I just went straight to the board, and they gave me what they could through a QSC monitor. The thing sounded awful. But the sound guy wasn't exactly competent, either.

By the way, the best sound guys hate QSC because to them the cabs really color the sound. RCF is regarded as a large step up in quality.

A lot of comments about "carrying the room" with this. That was never the intention. This is perfect for running direct out of the preamp into the board and having a personal monitor instead of schlepping an amp. I still have my Aguilar rig for home practice. I don't play gigs without sound support. But if I did, I'd take the Aguilar rig for sure.

I love my QSC gear!

In general, K10 has good definition and clarity, and i actually prefer it to my K12, especially when combined with sub support. I am glad to hear positive reviews of the CP12, as it's been on my radar for a while now.

Guitar Center Used often has plenty of QSC speakers available, if you are looking for a lower cost option.

My approach and gigging setup very much depends on whether I carry the room.

If my rig carries the room, I need to pump low-end energy into the room. In that case, I use bass cab and amp.

If there is PA to carry the room, I try not to pump lows into the room. In this scenario, I usually use Helicon FX150 for my monitoring (mounted on my mic stand). I cut all the lows on the Helicon. I use Eich Bass Board or Drumchair to get the feel of lows. So, that way, I get mids and highs from Helicon into my ears and tactile sensation of lows from Eich board or chair into my body. So low frequencies are not pumped into the room...

Thats what I thought too. I used a QSC K series for low volume bass with a duo and trio, and it died on me after about 6 gigs. Took it to an AUTHORIZED QSC SERVICE CENTER for repair. They told me within 2 days of receipt that it needed a new board. I approved the work the same day. After that, it took 5 months to get the unit repaired, and this is after both the service center and I called QSC multiple times. I was told it was due to unavailability of repair parts. Yet, new identical complete QSC units to mine were easily available for immediate order. My initial conclusion after discussion with service center and QSC, was that QSC’s business model prioritizes parts for assembly of new units, and they had not reserved sufficient parts for the repair pipeline. After finally getting my unit repaired, I took it out of “bass duty”. Be aware, and use your QSC carefully, if you plan to use it as a bass amp/monitor.
Sidelining customer needs to such an extent is unacceptable to me. Thanks.

I’ve played through many brands of powered speakers over the years.
They work well, especially QSC and JBL. I like them for lower volume gigs, or loud gigs with good FOH support.
For old school gigging where the bass am on stage is also to fill the room, they are not a substitute for a quality bass amp for me.

I bring PA. I have several options and some that will fit almost anywhere.

I have server "real" bass amp options as well, some that are stupid heavy that I'm not sure if I could lift anymore. Lately I've been going the pre-amp to powered speaker route using a Turbosound TFX122M-AN either directly from the pre-amp or routed through the monitors. It's worked well and has adequate volume, although it's not going to flap your pant legs. My biggest complaint is that it's not comfortable to carry when I only need one of them and can't bring them in their road case(s).
