NBD - G&L Tribute SB-2

A few weeks back I ordered the same bass in black, then cancelled it the next day when I recalled completing a survey for Music & Arts promising a 25% discount on $100 or more. After waiting for the promised coupon I reviewed the limitations and exclusions and it said special orders and pretty much everything was excluded...except G&L. I don’t know if that was an oversight or not.

The coupon finally showed up in my email on Saturday, so off to the local store to see if I could use it on a Tribute SB-2. I asked if it was considered a special order if it wasn’t in stock at the store, only in their warehouse, and he said it would be a special order. Rats. However, he surprised me by saying what good is a coupon that you can’t use, let me see if I can get it through. After a few minutes he asked for my CC and then handed me the receipt with the $150 discount applied.

I got a call from the store earlier today letting me know it was in, so for lunch I went and got it. I was hoping it would be a lot lighter than my BTB that is close to 12#, and imagine my delight when the scale registered 7 lbs, 14 ozs. Tuned her up, intonation was spot on and it is a delight.

My wife thinks I should get a different pick guard, and I’m game. Any suggestions for what would look good on a sonic blue (milky white?) guitar? I really like the “blue” with maple fingerboard, but would like something with more contrast.

Aged white pearl or mint green. just my two cents, but a light colored pickguard would fit as opposed to a dark one.

I do like both of those, especially the mint green. Ages ago in high school, I needed new running shoes and found a pair in mint green. Told my mom about them and we went to the store to try them on and maybe buy them. I showed them to her, and she said, those are beige. I couldn’t stand the thought of running in beige shoes...even though they looked mint green to me. I think I ended up with blue running shoes.

I recently put mint green on my P Bass. It's subtle but it stands out. I really do love the pg color and with a maple fretboard, will look even better than it does on my bass.

this is my P bass in Inca Silver with what came on it, a white PG

Black pearl, or simply black 3 ply. But...black pearl :)

Congrats that’s a whole lotta bass for that price. SB2s are sleepers, no idea why they continue to fly under so many people’s radar. Great rock basses...mine isn’t going anywhere.

Try soloing that neck pickup, it’s one of my favorite tones.

Congrats and really congrats for the bass not being a heavy weight. Months of following these on Sweetwater tells me you got lucky!
Parchment or black is my suggestion for the P/G.

I'm fond of tortoise myself. I put one on a Peavey T-40 natural recently, replacing the stock black one. It really made the appearance of that old bass pop. It provides a pleasant contrast on a lot of different colors. Be aware that on a Tribute, Pickguard Planet will most likely want you to ship them your old pickguard so they can use it as a template. They only have in-store templates for the Fullerton G&Ls, and there can be subtle differences.

I have a Fullerton SB-2, and it does indeed kick ass. Also a Fullerton Kiloton--same with it. Those MFD pickups are really something! Here's a photo of them along with a little Steinberger Spirit XT-25 I keep around to have a 5-string available. The metallic green Kiloton now has an "aged white pearl" pickguard on it from Pickguard Planet. Beautiful, but unfortunately, no recent photo of it.
