NBD! Ibanez Talman TMB30 30"short scale bass!

Yeah, it's basically a narrow bridge pickup. To replace it, use any old standard-width bridge pickup, and scrape or sand away a millimeter or two on each side to make it fit--just wrap some sandpaper around a small square dowel, for instance. (The mounting holes will be in the right spots.)

Further to my recent post, it seems that there are two types of bridge on this bass. The first is what looks like a standard Fender-type "bent metal" bridge. The second seems to be an Ibanez design, with four screws along the back, and two screws in the front. I am looking for a replacement for the second style.

This is the other style bridge on the TMB30. It looks a bit like the "Fender-style" one, but has only four (off centre) mounting screws at the back, and two at the front. I will probably leave it, but if someone finds a "drop in" replacement, please let me know what it is.

Is it possible there is an additional mounting screw under the G string saddle screw? Even if not, there is a chance that you might have standard fender bridge spacing. I'd measure it to be sure or just hold a Fender bridge over it. If not, then you can fill and re-drill for a standard Fender bridge. However, I'd probably just get a bass with enough play that you can mount it so that the new screws aren't too close to each other. An Omega might be a good possibility.

Of course my overriding thought in this situation is if it ain't broke don't fix it.

Hey guys, i love the bass but the tuners are pretty crap. Wanting to get the hipshot. When you get these in the set, do they come with two bass and two treble keys by default? https://www.guitarcenter.com/Hipshot/HB6C-1-2-Bass-Tuning-Machine-Set.gc
Or do you have to order them separately like from this site?
Hipshot Ultralite Tuner - HB6C 1/2 - Satin Chrome - Bass Side - Best Bass Gear
Thanks! The set is cheaper.
The first link isn't working. If they are USA ultralights I thought they were reversible. I'm pretty sure I've used a standard set on 2+2 and 3+1 instruments. IIRC, it's only the licensed/import versions that might not be reversible. I'd call Hipshot to be sure.

Definitely a cool looking bass. I just wish they made a version with a Maple FB. The 600TMB in natural is also cool looking.
The 600 is a really great looking bass. For folk buying online though I'd take a second to consider. All the TMB600's I've played have been considerably heavier than the 100/200 series examples. Heavy enough that I wouldn't purchase one, but that's just me.

This is not unique to Ibanez though as most companies that offer a mid-ranged ash-bodied instrument seem to settle for rather heavy wood (I'm looking at you Schecter....).

My conversation today with Willaim Ludwig from Hoshino USA

TALMAN

Thanks for clarifying!

I’ll definitely forward the request on in hopes that the parent company will add more finishes with Maple fretboards. The TMB100M that already has the maple fretboard only comes in a mint green and yellow flat color:

I personally love the pickups that are in the TMB600, so I’d also love to see this in a ample board!

Thanks again for the suggestions!

Hello B-Mac,

Thanks for the suggestion! We do get a lot of requests for color schemes and specifications on our models, and we appreciate your feedback.

Based on your message below, I wasn’t 100% sure if you were referring to the Talman acoustics, basses, or electric guitars! I can confirm that we’ve produced a few TMB100 with a maple fretboard, as well as plenty of Talman Electric Guitars with maple boards. If you are referring to the Talman Acoustic guitars, like the TCM50 and TCY10, you are correct in that we don’t make a maple board version.

I’d love to confirm which you were talking about and forward on a suggestion to the parent company in Japan!

Talk to you soon,

-Bill Ludwig

Will you EVER make a Talman with a Maple Fretboard?

I’d love a Black with Tort or a Natural with Tort (or both) with a Maple Fretboard!

Please consider making one!

TMB's are so cheap that it's probably worth it to just buy two and swap the necks. You'd probably only loose 50 bucks on resale and maybe almost nothing if you buy one of the two on sale or used.

Back before my downsizing, I though very seriously about buying a TMB 100 and 200 and swapping the necks. I like P/J (alot easier to replace the pups) on the 100 but the blocked necks on the 200 are undeniably hot.

Thanks. The link works on my laptop but not on mobile, strange. But they just have one set on guitar center. https://www.guitarcenter.com/Hipshot/HB6C-1-2-Bass-Tuning-Machine-Set.gc
I have my doubts about the set you linked to as they are specified for "Gotoh Mini" with 1/2 posts which is a smaller diameter tuner such as found on sounder basses. my guess -though someone more knowledgeable may contradict- is that the traditional style Talman tuners are larger. If no one here knows for sure, you need to measure the tuner hole in the headstock.

Once you measure the hole in headstock, you will be able to see which tuners will work.

Maybe these:

Here's the Hipshot page for tuners.
Bass Tuning Machines

You need to measure the tuner hole and the locations of the screws. There is a chance they will match up but you won't know until you break out the ruler. I wouldn't bother with the Stew Mac tuners as you can buy Lic. Import Hipshots for about the same price. The Lic Hipshot are great tuners and weigh alot less. I've got them on a couple of basses and they're standard on Lakland Skylines.

No matter what you go with you will likely have to redrill holes. One-per for Hipshot, and at least 2, possibly all 4 for others. Only having to redrill one hole each and knowing that there is almost zero chance that the new hole will be too close to an existing hole is one of the many benefits of installing Hipshot over other brands.

Thanks! l think these should work. earlier ln the thread someone said 1/2" ultrallte. l would get two treble side and two bass side. lt says on the page that they are not reversible. HB6 - 1/2

The TMB600 not as cheap
