NBD! Ibanez Talman TMB30 30"short scale bass!

OK... so I owe some amends to this bass. I own a bunch of shorties these days and have bad mouthed this one a bit, as I took it to one gig and it fell short (pun intended) to others I was using. I may not have given it enough of a chance. This weekend I brought it to an outdoor gig where I played on a float at a St. Patricks Day parade - and it delivered bigtime. I have Geezer pickups in mine, so there's that... but yeah. I've decide that this bass is staying in my arsenal.

...and following TB rules, it did really happen:

I recently got a TMB30 myself. What strings are you guys using?
I’ve thought about getting either some daddario short scale rounds or grab some TI short scale flats or try my luck with Ernie Ball cobalt flats

I just picked up a TMB30. Loving it so far. The width doesn't bother me. However, unlike the Mikro, I'm getting a ton of neck dive with the TMB30.
If I'm sitting without a strap, or standing with a strap, if I don't hold the neck up with my fretting hand or keep the arm of my plucking hand on the body, the neck just drops.
I don't imagine the materials would vary THAT much between production runs. It's obviously not as bad as a Squire full scale J-bass...but I didn't expect it from a short scale. I've attached pictures if anyone can tell me that the tuners look different than theirs. Looking for recommendations on (low cost) tuners, but probably don't want to bother unless it's known to make a pretty good difference. if I keep my plucking side's elbow/arm on the body it's generally not a huge deal.

....and while I was about it, I made it a fretless.

Can you tell me how it sounds/plays as a fretless? Do you still have the stock PU’s installed? Especially how is the fretless tone with the bridge pickup (with probably some bass boost - and do these pickups have any hum)? I usually like playing fretless long scales with bridge pickup soloed and a bit of boosted bass. Thanks for any info, from first glance this looks like a great inexpensive way to have a fretless short scale!

It sounds great as a fretless, although the magic ingredient was the Nordstrand Blade pickups. The instrument is passive, and I tend to run my amps quite flat. Also, for the sort of music I play, I tend to balance it toward the neck pickup. However, for something that cost me very little to put together, it "punches well above its weight" tone-wise.

I'm also enjoying my TMB30. Mine required a good bit of "elbow grease" (fret polish, sanding neck finish imperfections, rolling the edge of the fret board, tinkering with the action), but now it honestly rivals much more expensive basses in terms of playability. Also, I had to actually change the strings to get it to intonate properly. The stock strings felt terrible and I think they were actually defective. Finally, no neck dive noticed at all, so I guess the materials do vary quite a bit.

Now I'm looking to change the pickups. It's not because I don't like the sound (they sound fine to my ear), but because they sound like every other PJ bass out there including the other ones I own. I kind of miss the sound of the G&L I sold with the MFD pickup. Maybe I need to go in that direction.

I would love to check this model (TMB30) out in person, but can't find a dealer in the north east of England who currently stocks it. Does anyone from the UK know of any places that have this available in the Newcastle/Northumberland area?
PMT have a store In Newcastle. They will get any item from within their group of stores sent to Newcastle. I wanted to look at a TMB30. They got it delivered to the Manchester shop with A2 days.

I got mine used, just one year old. Had a tiny bit of buzz. It had the original “out of the box” stings, which were just a little light. I changed them for Ernie Ball slinky’s, (45/65/85/105 rounds).
No further setup required. No buzz, Accurate intonation, Good action. Sting height as recommended spec. Only niggle is the J pup volume control in not as sensitive as the P pup control. Overall played though my Fender Rumble, I get all the versatility I need. Excellent bass, great value for money.
