New La Bella Golden Alloy Flatwounds

Am I being obtuse here or are these Gold Flats the perfect complement for an ABG?

80/20 bronze alloy sounds an awful lot like the strings that came with my Breedlove Atlas Studio. Love the sound of the ABG - with a big slab of foam stuffed under the strings to muffle out the overtones. But the clank. The clank is rank. Although with a more discerning technique the clank can be minimized, it's impossible to avoid completely. I'm thinkin' the Gold Flats might just be the ticket. Think I'll head on over to Bass Strings Online and pick me up a set.

I just discovered these strings today while scrolling through the NAMM pics thread. I'm very interested--could be sonic and visual bliss with my Dark Star'd Lakland Dunn.

I'm sure they would be sweeeeet with those darkstars!

Got to check out Bubby Lewis's bass with these on it. He used the same set on tour for over a month. Never cleaned them, you can see they are slightly darker and some darker spots...

Unfortunately my cell phone camera color corrected the images incorrectly so they don't look as "gold" as they are irlf.

I'm guessing that he's diggin these :) that bodes well for a future set for me as he was a previous White Tapes player with a sig set IIRC and i loves me some tapes, whites in particular. Things that make you go hmmm.... (whisper: @SLaPiNFuNK I'll take a used test set ;) you know, when you're done with them)

Totally Trolling there ignore me :)

Just put a set on an Ibanez SR1405TE that I just picked up and was pleasantly surprised to find that the B string is a taper core. The bass came with light gauge Fodera strings and I wasn't really happy with the sound, but the gold flats sound a lot better. I was hoping for a little more upper mids, but they're still a vast improvement. I had to adjust the truss rod quite a bit because of the higher tension, but I was also able to lower the action a surprising amount and still have no fret buzz. I must say, Ibanez does a great job on the frets on the their Premium line basses.

Yep, the hollowbody has Lakland Joe Osborn flats (I think they're made by GHS, but I can't recall). The tone is pretty deep, with just enough mids to work in a band context. I've always wanted to try rounds on this one, but I have't done it yet.

I had one of the first year HB skylines with the bartolinis, and mostly loved it. I thought the pickups were very "clean",and maybe just a tad characterless. I've always wanted to hear one with the Darkstar pickups. I used the Lakland flat set on mine as well.

After playing the gold flats on my Ibanez SR 5 string for a while I decided that they're just not a good match for that bass. I'm going to try them on a couple 4 string basses and keep the B for some future experiment. Waiting on a set of GHS Pressurewounds from BSO for the SR, but they're apparently not in stock.

GHS changed their policies on us without notice which have unfortunately delayed some orders. We have a few shipments from them on the way. They are expected in early and mid next week. Any outstanding orders will be shipping then.

Curiosity got the better of me, so I finally bought a set of the new La Bella Golden Alloy (760FGS), and with much anticipation (I was all aquiver with excitement) installed them on my Fender Precision. These are the same gauge as the strings I removed...a set of La Bella DTB (760FS).

These new strings turned my highest output bass into my lowest output bass.

They also caused a fair amount of excess relief which I had to dial out, indicating a much higher tension required to achieve appropriate pitch.

They sound like my old set of Chromes .105-.050. Same sort of midrange, but no where near the output.

Very rough to the touch. They were scrupulously cleaned (wiped down) before installation as I do with all new strings. They are not nearly as smooth as the removed 760FS set. Very sticky. Nose grease helps, but is a poor substitute for a properly polished finish.

The package says that the (...",strings may appear dull over time.")

They look pretty on my blonde Fender 50's Classic Precision.

I'll give them a month or so, but generally, they aren't suitable to my requirements.
They may work just fine for other folks.

Non-smooth flats? That's a disappointment.
