Phil Jones Bass Owners' Club

I mentioned this a while ago, but here's my latest update. I've been using a PJBD4 with a laptop battery over 8 years with my bass ukes for most rehearsals and gigs my uke group does. A couple of years ago I bought a used one here on TB as a backup. A short while after, I wondered if I could hook them together, so I contacted Phil, who told me to Line Out from one, to Aux In with max volume on the other, which would allow the first one to control the volume and EQ on both, plus make it a 4x4 140w rig.

I tested it, which worked very well, but to stack them, I had to extend the feet on the bottom of the main one. I used the setup a couple of times, but it was a bit inconvenient transporting them in their own Arriba gig bags, and sitting one on the other precariously. So I decided to attach them together with metal brackets on the four corners, plus I added snaps to a carry handle I had in a drawer, that I attached to the top carry handles. I'm looking for a proper size gig bag, but for now will just not use one.

I just received my C8, so I’m now part of the club!

First impressions :
- that thing is small, but heavy! heavier than the bigger cab underneath…
- it smells glue… in my small room, that’s very unpleasant, and gives me headache…
- the sound is impressive. Well, it’s brand new, the basses are too soft, but I expect the sound to evolve (and after one hour of rehearsing, the sound is getting better). But so far the sound is more defined, more articulate than the Eich 15” I’m accustomed to. But my Eich still have more growl.

I bought the C8 for gigs in small rooms (like a bar), where my Eich is too big to fit the scene. But the C8 will also replace my Rumble 100 as a practice amp, just because it’s smaller, I will save some space in my room (and also because the Eich/C8 is immensely better than the Fender).

Happy so far! And it will get better over time, can’t wait!

I have a nice little double 4+ that I bought to go with my very unique Rickenbacker fretless 4003 (which has been converted to a single pickup configuration). I does the trick, but I am honestly thinking about an Ampeg PF20-T driving a PJB C2 cabinet..
Has anyone here tried driving a C2 with a PF20-T (or for that matter a PF50-T)?

I don't have a C2, but a PF50T into a C4 is my practice rig. Very very happy with it, I think the 50 might be a bit much for the C2 though. (I have the cage off as I was tube rolling.)

I used my Eden WT330 with one C2 and it was ok-ish. But when I added a second the amp came to life!
Equally with my PF50T that I ran with one SWR WM10 cab. It truly came to life when I added a second one.

So my advice would be: Get two C2's or one C4. ;)

Cheers!

Hey folks. What is the optimum (or minimum) power needed to drive a C8 cab? I don’t have anything super powerful at the moment but I want to make sure I do not buy a head that is too underpowered for a C8.

It depends of how loud you want it to be. PJB doesn't publish sensitivity of the C8, but it's fairly loud.

If it's for practice at home, 10 W are already plenty.

If you want to keep up with a drummer, you obviously need more. I'm not sure what the minimum is. I'd say 100 W is a bare minimum, but I've not tried the C8 with a 100 W amp. Mine can deliver 350 W, and I don't need to crank it up more than 1/10 of the master volume to keep up with my drummer (but he's quiet enough).

The C-8 is moderately sensitive but does like Watts. 8 ohm cab so look at the amp ratings at that Ohmage!

Depending on how loud you want/need to be, I’d say with a club band indoors with an acoustic kit; you would be well served at 200 or better.

Minimum for a rock band hard hitting drummer? 300

I run a Mesa WD800, pushes @400 at 8 ohms and I use about half that, with a drummer that hits hard: outdoors I’ve used about 3/4 of that 400.

I have a BG-110 (Cub II) that stopped making sound a couple of weeks ago. It appears to power up just fine, but the signal appears to die before it gets processed. I sent a message to PJB, so far no response...

But I like that little amp so much, I just ordered a new one. A new BG-120 to be precise, the one that can power an external cab. So I ordered a C2 cab to go with it. 😁

(I still want to get the BG-110 fixed, though.)
