Phil Jones Bass Owners' Club

It's here (NAD)!... The D4+ on low gain is considerably louder than the Riff on high gain, and D4+ on high gain does indeed leave the Riff far behind - I'm guessing +13 dB (3-4 times louder). Still awaiting the USB power pack and need to check Aux-In & BT, but it's a keeper!

Glad you're enjoying the D4+, I've been loving mine.

Here's a question for those smarter than me:
Can I run a mic (SM-58) into the aux-in using a Shure A85F Line Matching Transformer - Low Z Female XLR to High Z 1/4-Inch Phone Plug (and a 1/4 to 3.5mm adapter)?

I emailed PJB with that question, but didn't get a response.

I think Aux-In is going to like a little boost behind it, so doubt that just matching the Z is going to do it - think "mixer"?...

Try it - it shouldn't hurt anything.... ;)

Has anyone here been able to A/B test the D4 and the D4+?

I'm trying to figure out if the D4+ makes sense for me if I'm not planning on using Bluetooth.
I bought a used D4 recently — just before the D4+ was released — so regret a little bit but I'll keep it anyway.
I'm pretty sure that the 10W difference are negligible, AFAIK the 2 main differences are:
  1. Bluetooth
  2. Optional battery power

It has been 5 years since I posted this answer and I think it is still the answer....
Thanks!

Given that it produces 95 dB with 1W, it’s not a very loud cab. My Amp is an Eich T1000 (2x500 W amp bridgeable), that can produce either 700W at 8 ohms in bridge mode (too much for the C4), or 350 W at 4 ohms (I don’t know how much at 8 ohms, but I think it’s not more than 200 W at best, I should get around 115 dB, a little too weak if my drummer is too loud).

So the C8 might be a better option, as it is rated for 800 W at 8 ohms, so that I have enough power to drive it on bridge mode, and it should be loud enough.

Am I right ?

Hey there!

Do you know what are the sensitivity of various cabs from PJB ? I specifically search the specs of C4, C8 and C9, it seems that PJB doesn’t publish that (or I’m pretty bad at searching, that’s also possible). Thanks!
I think you won't find these figures if PJB don't want to publish them. In my experience, the sensitivity specs are not useful if you want to compare cabs from different brands, because even when they publish theses specs, each brand uses its own method of measurement, you can't compare sensitivity between brand A and brand B.

It's only useful if you want to compare several cabs from the same brand.

I know. I just want to have a rough idea if the C4 is loud enough given that my amp is an Eich T1000 (which is great but not very powerful to drive 8 ohms load), or if I need to upgrade to the C8 (which may not be more efficient, but accept more power). Basically, to check my assumptions of post #7468. For that I need the efficiency of the cab. I don’t care if the measure is perfect, an order of magnitude is plenty enough. I expect the C4 has a (relative) poor efficiency, given it’s size, but can I play at a gig with that cab ? Or should I buy a C8 ?

I believe, C4 was rated 95dB or alike. it's a small cab, comparable to a good 1x10" per TB wisdom.

I got lost what the T1000 pushes frankly, I believe at bridged mode that's whopping 700W. so a C8 with a T1000 makes more sense IMHO.

Speaking of the C8, I just used my new C8 at a wedding gig last night with my BG400 (neglected to take a pic of the setup aside from my pedalboard), but I got several compliments on the sound. When I have the dough I'm definitely going to get another C8.

Any thoughts on using a BP-800 with two C4s and a Cab 27 all together? I'd probably never max the volume but wouldn't want to overload the amp running less than 4 ohms. Thanks!
I would think it is not a good idea to hook all three cabs to the head, as you would present a 2.67 Ohm load on an Amp that is rated for a 4 Ohm minimum load. I would think that the two C4s would be fine, and the Cab 27 wouldn't be adding much anyway.

Two weeks ago, my band performed at an outdoor event. I used two BG400s and two C4s. They were plenty loud! I have attached a photo and video.
