Squier Classic Vibe Club (Part 3)

That walnut-finish P with the Freeman neck… WANT!

CV70s body, I’m guessing?

Oh no, it's a one-piece swamp ash body stained using Birchwood Casey Walnut tint + their Tru-Oil product. :woot:
No idea of the brand but it might have been Hosco

Thanks guys for the comments on my damaged bass. I'll contact Fed X and see if they will do anything. I'm doubtful. I'm keeping it regardless. The neck seems better than the one on my Player P bass purchased last year. Working on breaking in the strings. Right now they sound a bit like tilt-up garage door springs ;-). I know that is normal. Gets better every day.

Update on my damaged CV60 bass.

Well it turns out "my guy" at the seller went on vacation right after the last email confirming the shipment of the bass to me. After someone checked his email, they contacted me right away. They immediately offered to overnight me a replacement bass with a mailing label to return the damaged one.

It arrived the next morning without a mark on it. I used it at a rehearsal last night. No chance to check the setup as my gear was in the car. Just gave it a quick check on the couch and it seemed fine. It even sounded great with the stock strings through my Rumble 100.

I was a llittle worried about string rattle but once plugged in I guess I just naturally play a little softer. No problem at the rehearsal.

Great service from Sweetwater (the seller) and UPS! The first bass was not shipped by UPS. How you get a large box from Louisville, KY to Sylmar, CA iit approx 4 hours is beyoned me. Daparted at approx. 3:40 AM and arrived at approx. 4:40. Amazing! I didn't want to mention names in the original emain with people being sued for posting negative comments or reviews!

I have the original bass packed up and will take it to our local UPS store this morning.

Great sadness here. Found a Butterscotch 50’s P (my white whale) on GC used, and had a nice chat with the store confirming the excellent condition.

Comes off the UPS truck today and I can immediately tell it’s been through hell. Big ol’ chunk taken out of the paint on the bottom — which is wild because it was well-packed. Warehouse must have juggled my box. So bummed :( so hard to find them in this color…

My questions are;
  1. "Are you going to keep or return it?"
  2. "Do you still have the shipping box and packing material to document any damage?"
I can only speak for myself, but as someone who found his own "white whale" on the same database just recently (I'm thinking of nicknaming it "Nessie" 😁), if it played/felt/sounded great, I'd keep it, but call GC immediately to firmly ask for either a small refund or, at the very least, store credit. If the damage was already there, and their rep didn't disclose preexisting damage over the phone, they screwed up big time and should offer some sort of recompense.

If the damage was in-transit, then find out what kind of insurance GC puts on their used instruments and see if the shipper will compensate you.

And, if you do decide to keep it, I'm sure there are many here who're in-the-know who'd fall over each other with suggestions...either how to keep it from spreading and snagging on stuff OR maybe even how to make it almost disappear. ;)

Haha yeah, took a ton of photos of the box in rough shape, as well as the pile of paint chips collected in the bubble wrap 😢

The damage is in the least visible spot, but I would definitely have to glue the cracks in some form as the finish is razor thin to begin with w/ the translucency (it continues to chip off if you rub your finger over the damage). Partial refund is a good idea! I’ll see what they can do and weigh a return if it isn’t appealing.

In the meantime I’ll be back to searching for another one haha!

Damage aside, does it play well enough to keep?

Oof. It hurts just looking at those pics from @cashmoneywill. My condolences.

Gotta say, though, that grain underneath looks pretty good. Maybe this is sacrilege (and it’s definitely not the butterscotch you wanted), but I wonder what that bass would look like stripped down to natural? I can’t say I’ve ever seen an early-50s-style P in the nude (so to speak).

Hope you’re able to get a satisfactory resolution. I’ll think good thoughts for you as I play this bass’s LPB cousin shown in my avatar. :bassist:

Am I the first person to put a Spitfire on a Squier? Possibly, but I don't regret it. It looks amazing, and it's a big improvement over the stock guard. Also added flat-top barrel knobs.

You’re not the first, but wow what a looker!
I’ve since sold the Spitfire I had on my CV 70s J, but now I’m in the market for a Precision guard lol.

That’s the best thing about a CV in my opinion… they’re nice enough to warrant some pretty swanky upgrades, AND you don’t have to feel obligated to be “accurate” or “period-correct” unless you want to. I spent more to put a 3-ply guard on my CV50s P even though I know that the “correct” 50s SCPB guard is single-ply. Why? Because I thought the 3-ply would look cool… and to my eye, it does.

(So does that Spitfire, by the way…)

I bought mine used, but it came upgraded with Hipshot tuners. I added a Hipshot Xtender drop tuner as well as the Spitfire. The rest is stock, and I’d put it up against any other bass I’ve played. Such a great bass!
