AH600SMX
(2) 2103X cabs. My band is not quiet. I play on 4-5.

Picked this fella up from Craigslist earlier this week. Took a significant amount of time to figure out how all of the tone shaping interacts but I've got it dialed in and love it!

Dumb question: have you found that cranking the gain actually changes the tonal character? May just have to fly the pirate flag and swipe your settings. I have the 130 but rarely use other than as a practice rig.

I always felt with my SMX that turning up the input gain made it have more bite and aggression.

You do get a noticeably different tone by cranking the master output level, and using the input gain as the volume control - versus setting the input gain so that the peak / overload lights at your most heavy handed, then backing of a couple of clicks, and using the output level to set the volume in the room (as intended by the designer).

The only problem with former method is that it has a less than optimal signal to noise ratio, and the mismatched gain staging means that you've effectively raised the threshold of the noise reduction circuit, and compressor (on models with those features built in), and that both of these problems are multiplied by any devices you might have in the effects loop.

I don't know that I've played with it enough to be able to answer better than those before me, but I'm enjoying my tone more with the input level set according to instruction. Cranking output gain does not really do much but make the same sound louder.

AH400SMX picking up locally in the morning. Had the AH350 back in the 80's. Hopefully got a good deal, not priced too bad from what I been seeing different Trace Elliott amps for sale. Not a very good picture, always liked the black light on this model. Has the rat fur on the cab, can't tell if it has the green,or black in the picture.

Just picked the AH400SMX and got it home now. Might should have done more homework, about it says 4ohm minimum, and my only cab is 8ohm! I know you can go with two 8ohm cabs to get the 4ohm. So may have to find a 4ohm cab now. It does have the green rat fur!View attachment 5162647

8 ohms is fine. It's also fine to run a 4 ohm cab, but do not run 2.67 ohms or 2 ohms.

It's true the amp will make less power at 8 ohms, but that is not necessarily a problem. Also it does not mean the amp will be louder with a 4 ohm cab. You have to consider both the usable power and the sensitivity ratings of the cabs.

You can use this formula to determine calculated SPL:

Calculated SPL = [Log(Usable Power) x 10] + Sensitivity Rating

Where:
1. Usable Power is the minimum between how much power the amp is rated for at the speaker's impedance and how much power the speaker can handle
2. Sensitivity is measured at 1 meter with 1 Watt applied.

When you add a matching cab, assume impedance is cut in half, total power handling is doubled, and sensitivity goes up +3dB.

@Wasnex Thanks for your input. I was hoping someone on here would comment,or stieer me in the right direction. Feel relieved, thinking I was going have find me a 4ohm cab.

If the 8 ohm cab is loud enough, you are good to go. If you need more volume, if possible get a matching 8 ohm cab, so you have a modular rig. Use one cab for smaller/quieter gigs and bring both when you really need to crank.

Noticing the AH400SMX fan seems to run all the time, and noisy? I am only using it at home in bedroom, and more noticeable.View attachment 5176396
Do you have a rocker panel on the back that switches between low and high speed?
Maybe in that circuitry. Presumably the wiring
in the cabinet is proper.
