Team Trace Elliot pt4.

Thanks, not an amp expert, but how would you go about replacing? Fan is continuously running.
Neither am I. Especially on my 80's AH350X heads.
Back when I used them on a regular basis, I turned on the head and occasionally verified fan speed which probably stayed on for all I know. Maybe I'm an idjit, but I assumed that was just the nature of the Beast and figured better they stay on since I was pumping them pretty hard into a stacked 4 ohm load as opposed to allowing the head to thermal or burn a fuse. Which never happened.
The tree never fell. I was somehow under the impression your fan was not coming on. Maybe Tony at Planet Bass could shed some light on the subject but you'd likely need to contact an old school repair tech like I have locally and approach the subject a little more familiar with old British and/or tube lead sleds. Wish I had a better redirect. Good luck

Thanks, I had a AH350SMX back in the late 80's. Sold it to the Church I attended back then. It is still there at the Church, and I was back there in one of services, and got the chance to play bass through that same amp through a MesaBoogie 4 x12's. Never noticed the fan running unless it was not working? Fan on mine runs not noisy just notice it running continuously. Take Care!

May be having to sell my AH400SMX GP12 to fund another vintage amp Peavey Megabass amp. Trace Elliott amp works great all knobs anc contros work, and black functions like it should. Has the green tint rat fur on exterior and not beat or banged up.

So back in the late 90s when on tour with my band, while the singer was banging the drummer in the next room, I would be lying in bed oggling over the Trace Elliott catalogue of the day featuring amps I couldn't afford. Fifteen years later I finally managed a MkV AH250 (GP11) head + 2103x cab courtesy of eBay, but then ditched the head as soon as I realised how convenient Class D amps were, and up until two weeks ago the 2103x has been a coffee table (hence my long term tenous membership of the Trace Elliot club). But then in a stroke of serendipity a broken 715SMC, 1210HSMX missing the amp, and a 1153 cab all came up nearby. So £100 (125USD) later, and after flipping the GP7 into the 4x10 cab I am now the proud owner of both a hernia inducing combo and a lovely stack to use with my Aguilar, all of which would have cost me many thousands back in the day...

What I didn't realise is that the 2103x was specially voiced to work with the 15 inch speaker, albeit the Series 6 whereas mine is a bit newer and has ports. Thus said, and despite the wisdom on this forum, mixing the three different speaker sizes works great!

Well that was fun... got all nostalgic and dug the following two out of old talkbass threads, probably the same as I was reading close to 30 years ago! What I can't get over is how expensive it all was, as even in todays money without 30 years of interest they are still on the edge of affordable.

What's also fun is the recommended systems, especially given I more or less have their "medium power compact system" now. Again their suggestion of matched speakers are somewhat at odds to things written on this website, but to give them credit my little stack does sound awesome (with the Agi head).

It's important to note that those systems were designed to work together.

Things get problematic when people start throwing together random cabs, with varying specs, from different manufacturers.

That said, it's generally safer to just find a cabinet you like the sound of, and if you want your rig louder / bigger / moarrrrr! just add an identical cabinet.

Some of the best sounding rigs I have ever played were mix and match. Some of the worst sounding were designed to work together.

Might sound like ass, but shouldn't just self destruct under normal conditions.
I've always at least in my own pursuits found that if I didn't like the attributes of a particular instrument or amp system, try something else and not throw money down a rabbit hole experimenting/jerry rigging with specs and features not designed to function together. Unless of course, you're an experienced electronics and cabinet designer- builder.

So would it be considered heresy to cut down this old Marshall amp to fit into the space where the GP7 used to go (and yes I would have to re-mount the circuit boards and transformer but that isn't a major problem)?View attachment 5276774

As your going to have to re-mount everything anyway, and cutting the chassis down is non-reversible, I'd just fabricate a new chassis.

I'd be a bit more concerned that it's already on fire, and a fuse has been lit...

...unfortunately it is all pretty much worthless junk, the Marshall is a 2195 but the power amp seems to have been previously fried and someone put in a non-Marshall replacement, so it is a long way from vintage. The main value is keeping entertained. I have a buddy who is a bit of an electronics whizz and frankenstein amps are currently his thing of the moment. Switching the trace GP7 head into the ported 4x10 has worked really well, but that now leaves the Trace 15inch combo without an amp - the choice is either to turn it into an additional standalone cab, add the Marshall, or switch the amp between the two cabs depending on mood...
