Double Bass Tempera Hybrid Strings

Curious about how the tension of the Temperas might compare to the Evah Piraazi Slaps. Anyone have experience with both?

According to published data, The Hybrids have a tension of 24Kg and the Gold Slaps have a general tension of ~21Kg on average. I've played the Pirastro strings and they are definitely low tension. I have not played the Temperas.

I recently received an updated set of the HYBRID. I didn't think it could get any better, but it did. The Arco sound in particular has improved so much, it's incredibly loud now. Does anyone know if the HYBRID they have for sale now has been updated again?

Improved over? What strings were you using before? Thanks.

I just switched from Tempera hybrids to Sonores Helix since the hybrids sounded a bit to much like a steel string to me. However, right now the Helix sounds a bit to far in the other direction (but they are of course not played in yet)… Maybe the Tempera Basso would be the middle way for me? Expensive experiments…

oh hmm. I’ve got an order in for Helix right now. Hopefully they work for me.
Got Oliv g and d strings and they are just a little dark and smooth for me. Seems i might just have a dark sounding bass.

Basso are even brighter than the hybrid

How much time were the hybrids on the bass and is your bass inherently bright/dark/in between?

Two weeks in with my hybrids and now the tone is really settling in to be just about perfect. I hope they don’t get any darker, actually. I’d say they were bright in the beginning but not steely sounding, if that makes sense. My bass is pretty much in the middle on the “bright to dark” bar.

To be honest, they sound (beautifully) like guts. I say that having practically zero experience playing on guts, just from what I’ve heard on recordings for my whole life.

Jan-Ole told me about the hybrids when he contacted me to say they were ready to make my strings (they weren’t available when I filled out the form many moons ago). He mentioned that players were using the hybrids in orchestra - which would not suggest a bright/steely string to me. But I guess it’s still/always that every bass responds a little differently to each string. Those basses with the hybrids in orchestra may very well be inherently dark instruments…

They were on the bass for almost two months. The bass is “in the middle” I would say.
I’ve played a lot on unwounded gut and my temperas definitely sounded more like steel than guts(but still a lot better than steel). ;)
It might be a setup thing as well…

How is the tuning stability now that they’ve been on your bass a few weeks?

I´m sure you will like your Helix! I just got mine (finally) and they are stretching now. They seem to be exactly what I was looking for :) A middle ground between gut and steel (closer to gut but good sustain), comfortable tension but not floppy and thicker diameter. A new thicker Velvet Anima perhaps on which I played for years. I wouldn´t trade these for Hybrids I had which were related more to steel strings.
So thanks @jesperthorn, @Kristian and @crd !
Still have Temperas (Basso) on my arco bass.

Funny this is how I would describe the Hybrids on my bass. Hybrid is a good name for them!
That´s true! The arco sound of the Hybrids fits in the orchestra section. They are truly great hybrids. Helix is also a good arco string but the sound is grittier and "gutalike". If I had only one bass for everything it would have Temperas (Basso or Hybrid) or EP weichs on it.

I just ordered a set of Solo Temperas. Is anyone experienced with these strings?

I strung my bass with Passione Solo to work on my solo-skills over the winter. I could not stand this high pressure sound. I hope, Jan-Ole needs not too much time, though…

I do only have one bass so…
The Hybrids really are the answer to my prayers.

The Hybrids Amplify SO damn well. They seem to take the edge off the Piezo sound on their own, they growl and sustain on the bottom with that overtoney thing that Animas used to have (but without those finger and board cutting windings) they sing on top and play evenly all the way across at any register. (amped) if you take out the bow there in not that rude awakening of over loud, horror scratch that leaves you knob twiddling with a bow in your hand and a bass in the other. They are warm enough (G string) to satisfy your Oliv craving (that thing that makes you mix sets cause G strings are never there) and they are fast as the wind (both how quickly they respond and how easy it is to get around -tension-) Lower your action and they don't scuffle the fingerboard or die off, raise the action and they don't choke or become impossible to play. I think these strings are perfect, but I also see them as the beginning of a whole new grouping of strings with different sounds but similar playing characteristics. These guys are really on to something.
