The Modified BEAD 4 String Bass Club

 Wow! That string calculator is brilliant! I shall definitely have a play around and see what I come up with :) thanks for your help!

Tension may differ slightly between different makes, but not dramatically. Feel and flexibility are different chapters. Feel is a matter of finish. Flexibility depends on construction. A while ago I published a video on how I restring a bass with flatwounds. I like them perfectly smooth, so I invest in a little extra work. Preparing strings

Getting ready to record on my BEAD p in my buddy's studio a couple months ago. It's been strung with D'A Chromes for quite awhile but I'm giving it a tuneup soon and will change to LaBella Jamersons.

Running Modified BEAD is running an actual normal tension B string E, A & D

Tuned BEAD would just be de-tuning normal gauge EADG strings.

So if you were running normal tension BEAD strings you should be included in the list.

If I missed anyone speak up.

Thanks

Body is one solid piece of Hawaiian Koa, Tele Bass neck is Pau Ferro.

Fret markers are on top edge of neck, 1/8" silver inlay dots.

Finish was done with Watco Danish Oil which means any scuffs or scratches are super easy to touch up with a perfect match.

Tough to wrap my head around the fact that she's 35 years old.

I look at high end basses all the time. Your bass, and the guy that has the all ebony necked Doug Irwin take the prize, imo. I'd post pics of that thing everyday if I had it.

My Ibanez SR300 is strung with Ernie Ball Slinky's .130 to .065 and it sounds killer! I think that on a 4 string tuned BEAD, active basses are almost essential, and I don't think passive could really support it fully. Also, I was wondering, would flatwounds sound better than roundwound on a 4 string BEAD tuned, or is it just preference?

Thanks :)
I don't think that at all, about active versus passive. My BEAD bass is all passive, and it roars.

I think that like rounds versus flats, it's just a matter of preference.

The OctoBird is tuned bBeEaAdD. Fundamental strings are a Circle K balanced .142 set (.059 .079 .106 .142), and octaves are a balanced .073 set (.028 .039 .055 .073). 33" scale.

Very nice. Looks like the bridge pickup is pretty close to the Rickenbacker position, too. Bet that bass sounds truly thunderous.

Running BEAD on a very expensive bass, I was concerned about the change in tension adding a B string, but 20 years later, I've never once had to adjust my truss rod.

I would be more concerned running too low tension simply de-tuning normal strings that many steps down.

I employed the same concept when I ran my Epiphone acoustic electric, going to Martin Heavies, so while the guitar was tuned BEADF#B the overall string tension didn't change because of the heavier gauge strings all across the fingerboard.

Rehearsal tape running way too much chorus into my Digitech
Valve FX guitar preamp.

So basically running acoustic Baritone strings on a regular acoustic. It sure toughened up your callouses.

BEAD is actually less tension, not more, most of the time. A B string usually has less tension than a G string does.

I have detuned a regular set of strings on occasion, but I don't like doing that. When I joined a band that was in that low a tuning, I got a new set of strings specifically for that.

Yeah, I want flats for mine as I feel they would give a more bassy sound perfect for a low B. Maybe Flatwounds on the B and E, and Roundwounds on the A and D :p
I'm the opposite. I'd want more bite and grind on the B and E, so rounds for them, while more boom on the D and maaaaybe the A. If I were going to use a mixed set of rounds and flats (I use all rounds).

In many aspects a better machine :D
Yeah, my Peavey, which had sounded rather meh before, came alive with the new tuning and the mods.

Even at normal tuned tension, a B string still feels quite rubber bandy.
I always have to be careful with tuning and with how much pressure I use fretting, because just a bit too much and the string will ring sharp.

I'll be joining this club as soon as I get that bass from UPS. I've decided with my stubby hands the width of most 5 strings is just too much, until I can get a custom short scale 5'er made I'll just do BEAD on a 4. And since I'm always broke, I'll probably be doing BEAD for a long while haha
