Short Scale Experts - what <$300 bass would you recommend for a middle school music program? I am helping out at my son’s school. The program already has several 34” basses, fretted and fretless, but I would like to get maybe a 30” fretted for the smaller 6th and 7th graders. The students I’ve met usually started on guitar.

I've been scouring the used sales on Craigslist and Facebook and haven’t seen anything nearby in this price range, except the Ibanez Mikro. That could work but I’d like to explore options for a slightly longer scale, so it won’t be too big of a jump when they move up to 34”.

So far, I have read a lot about the options from Ibanez, Glarry, Harley Benton, and Gretsch. I’m comfortable modding too, if that’s your advice.
Thanks!
I'll throw in my two cents.

I recently bought a Glarry short scale.

Delivered to my house under $78.

The cons:
1. nothing is shielded.
2. It needed an intonation.
3. The next needed some tweaking of the truss rod.
4. Factory strings aren't the best.
5. Needed minor fretwork.
6. The tuners aren't great, but it's still settling in.

The pros:
1. It sounds decent. It's a lot of bass in a very small package.
2. It's inexpensive.
3. It's a lot of fun to play.
4. Once it was set up, it has stayed where it should be.
5. For a child, it'll be just right for the size. Heck, I'm 6'3" 225# and because of its size, it lives behind the couch in my living room rather than in the basement with its siblings. That means I'm more likely to grab it and practice while I'm watching TV.

I've been bitten by the short scale bug, as I'm going to be building my next one, and bought a Soviet Borisov (fingers crossed it'll get out of Ukraine) which is a shorter than 34" scale.

So with the Glarry, I guess that means I'm a member of the short scale club.

I picked up a Lieber Guitars - Stanley Clarke, Spellcaster short scale last year. Can I join the Club?
Need to post pix of your new bass.

Brand new, direct from Lieber Guitars? Get a Sunburst? Only asking as the website shows a Seafoam or surf green and a yellow or butterscotch finishes.

Someone buy this odd yet awesome short scale so I don’t have to. I like what Danny is doing resurrecting old discarded projects.

I don’t love strap buttons on the heel or I’d probably have picked it up already. Some awesome tones demo’d

If one is adventurous - there are a lot of gems out there needing a bit of TLC. I totally relate to this guy and have done many restorations and hybrids using basses most players pass on.

The other thing I like about his vid (at the end) is how he breaks down what something of this nature costs. Maybe people don't realize what goes in to dialing-in a marginal bass to make it exceptional. It's a lot of work, and that work needs monetary compensation. As in... nothing is free, and if it's cheap - it's usually crap. (or in need of major modding which will be on your clock)

People like me start out doing it for the love of the experience as artists/designers/builders/players, but anyone like me living in the "real world" will not give what we've accomplished away for peanuts. Consider this when looking at basses like this. Such is a labor of love - and unlike an under $100 bass from China - nothing real is cheap. His asking price for what that bass is after the work he did on it is very reasonable.

Good luck! My Valiant Mini Bass made it out. I hope your Borisov does, too.

Here’s a few pics

I bought this from Tom Lieber last year and requested all black, so I had to wait for it, but well worth it! Tom was absolutely great to work with!

Such a fun bass!!

I just finished refurbishing my old Squier Bronco.

The pickup is now a custom hand made/wired split neodymium bass pickup; I stripped the body's original color to the wood and made a nitro lacquer which I mixed and rattle can painted. The Musicmaster pickguard has been on it for ages (the bass was originally black)

I'm very happy with it because I love the feel of the body now and it finally sounds like an actual bass.

It's currently strung with Ernie Ball SS cobalt flats tuned in D standard.

You have been issued number #766 in the Official Short Scale Bass Club! :bassist:

I picked up the California Blue Squier Bronco for $170 new yesterday. Finally got around to playing it today and wow am I impressed! I lowered the saddles just a tad but otherwise it was setup rather well out of the box.

I’ll be taking the Bronco and a Rumble 40 (used, $130) to my eldest’s middle school music program tomorrow.

Thanks for your suggestion for a short scale bass!
