Short Scale Experts - what <$300 bass would you recommend for a middle school music program? I am helping out at my son’s school. The program already has several 34” basses, fretted and fretless, but I would like to get maybe a 30” fretted for the smaller 6th and 7th graders. The students I’ve met usually started on guitar.

I've been scouring the used sales on Craigslist and Facebook and haven’t seen anything nearby in this price range, except the Ibanez Mikro. That could work but I’d like to explore options for a slightly longer scale, so it won’t be too big of a jump when they move up to 34”.

So far, I have read a lot about the options from Ibanez, Glarry, Harley Benton, and Gretsch. I’m comfortable modding too, if that’s your advice.
Thanks!
Fender has a lot of deals on basses on their website so you should have no problem finding something suitable.

Squier Bronco. Get one of the newer ones with the 4 saddle bridge.

Another vote for the Squier Sonic Bronco. I recently purchased on for my youngest who found their Mikro too small and a Squier P bass too big. The only complaint we both have is it is a touch noise sensitive. At some point I will take it apart and add some shielding.

I’ll go with the Squier Bronco. It checks all the boxes - price, 1.5” neck, simple controls, passive electronics, and your recommendations. And the California Blue one is on sale for $170 at GC right now. Nice timing. I will shield it and do a setup before I donate it to the school. Thanks everyone!

IIRC the Bronco uses a single-coil pickup so you can easily change that out to a single-coil sized humbucker to get rid of the noise entirely.

Thank you…
I'm sure the Artec pickup sounds great, and I don't think there's any correlation between the price of a pickup and the quality of its sound.
I'm intrigued, how do the variatone works, and what are you blending with the blend knob?
So the varitone is a 6 position switch that has a series of capacitors and resistors to alter the sound.. basically has a clean roll off sound I guess then basically a treble boost/mid boost/mid scoop/bass boost and then a fat thump position using a power choke.. the blend knob!! So the varitone is wired in place of the tone capacitor on the tone pot so you can blend between the varitone signal and bypass or wet dry if you will.. that’s how it works and it’s awesome! Tons of sounds

I'm most interested. I'm working on a project of custom bass, this is typically the kind of original settings I'm interested in.
Would you care sharing a link to the varitone you installed? Also, a sound demo would be super interesting (but I know how difficult and time consuming it is).
But I have to do my own research first. Anyway - very inspiring, thank you.

in the 29.5 scale range (sub-short) there are fender minis and Ibanez Mikro basses that would provide drastically different playing experiences.

The fender would provide the more "classic" look/feel at a smaller size where the Mikro is more modern in shape/neck contour.

There is a chance you can see new/used ones at Guitar Centers near you. Also, I've seen them in Music-and-Arts chain stores, along with SS Stingrays (which may be outside your price range).

If you can find a walnut Mikro, it might be a winner as the natural finish will hold up to middle school abuse a bit better than the painted finishes that are thin, brittle, and can chip.

I believe the tone selection switch on the Nordy Cat v1 amounts to a varitone. The buttons are for: open (no cut), cut, deep cut, and notch.

This works for me because my settings for recording are constant.

The Nordstrand Tone Drop I installed on the Chowny CHB-1 amounts to the same thing, really, if the tone is either wide open or fully closed: open, cut, deep cut.
