Where do you eat after shows??

I USED TO- not now.. on my return trips from South Lake Tahoe, stop at a gas station/ convenience store in Carson City, top off my gas tank (remember those days?) and get- a bag of Smart pop cheddar, and a tall hot chocolate... and, a snickers bar! MMMMM.

Back in the day (80s) here in greater Cincy there were lots of late night eats available. If we weren't in a hurry, Pepper Pod was always a wait being full of drunk people at 2 AM. But most times, it was a Cincinnati style chili parlor (Dixie, Chrystal, Gold Star, Skyline, etc.) Now only a few open until midnight.

I just remembered back when I used to live in SF (San Francisco) and was a gigging choral singer, it was rare that I’d have late night gigs. But even when I would get home late, I’d go to Pakwan on 16th Street for some Pakistani curry or tandoori chicken/fish. And I was just there a couple weeks ago and pleased to say that it still tastes amazing there.

Here’s an answer guaranteed to make people groan loudly: I’ve been a proponent and participant in the practice of intermittent fasting since 2015. By the time most shows end I’m into my daily 16-hour fasting window and as such I never consume anything but water after a gig.

If anyone needs me I’ll be over in the corner on a very smug high horse, haha :smug:

I've been gearing up to try fasting - I think back before stores, drive-ins, refrigerators, farming there was probably often days you didn't eat and your system got a break. It looks like it might make sense to go a couple of days with just water and some electrolytes once in a while also.

I’m not into whole day fasting. The whole OMAD thing might work for some folks but it’s not something I’ve ever wanted to do. I do intermittent fasting with an 8/16 eating/fasting window everyday. Basically I eat between 10am and 6pm, and then I’m done for the day except for water.

What is the go to post-gig food spot in your neck of the woods?
  • mid/late 70's, Detroit suburbs: White Castle. There was a 24-hr one at 12 Mile Rd & Gratiot. (pronounced GRASH-it) The mighty whitey one-bitey rules!
  • 80's/90's, San Francisco: A funky chinese diner on lower Turk St in the Tenderloin. I forget the name. It changed owners twice while I was there. It probably no longer exists.
  • 00's/mid 10's, Canada: N/A. I didn't gig/jam in Canada.
  • 2015 - present, Frankfurt/Rhein-Main area: the venue. TBF, it's been almost 2 years since I played out on a regular basis.

Just wrapped up a gig. Give you 3 guesses where we ate post-gig, and the first 2 don't count.

It’s been a while but if we were on Southside it was the Purple Onion. Nothing like a scratch built 3 cheese calzone with killer red gravy for dipping at 3 AM to set the tone for Sunday.
I lived out of town on the other side of town so if we skipped the Purple Onion, I’d hit The Griddle House on my way home. It was a repurposed Waffle House location so essentially the same format, just yellow and white. The food was nothing to write home about but it was hot, and 3 AM crowd watching was worth going for. On one occasion the cops were called to drag an intoxicated female out from under a table where the guy she staggered in with was sitting with his eyes rolled back in his head. Good times I tell ya, good times.
