Double Bass Audio Sprockets ToneDexter

Hey guys,

I'd like to know about your experiences in the studio with the tonedexter. I'm using a non Slot 22 Wavemap that works really well for live situations. I was wondering in what way the TD could be used in the studio. Normal setup is DI + Mics of course (alone in the room).
I thought about making a slot 22 Wavemap to have the full bass sound but then the engineer wouldn't get the dry DI signal. I guess it would be a bad idea to split the signal of the bass before it goes into the TD.

I briefly pondered mounting my URB piezo on one of my Baby Basses to see if I could run it through my TD tone maps, but couldn't figure out a place it would fit. Anyway, one of the good things about TD is you still feel and hear your real bass acoustically.

I've played several Yamaha Silent Basses. The necks and bridge on those older models had an unusual feel, nothing like my Clevenger Keyhole from 1983, that I upgraded the pickup system on. At that time they would match the neck profile

to your own Double Bass, so mine feels great.

For the price it had better 'Do It'.
There's only one way to tell, Rick. You know we are all waiting for your next gear trial....
but seriously it is great to have TB'ers provide some balance / and hands-on insight to new developments in gear. Not that I am GAS'ing for one of these ( unless I get that $500,000 inheritance from the unknown Nigerian plane crash victim).

I still think incorporating a TD / BodyRez / mic emulation into the bass electronics is an interesting development / move, and might be an incentive for existing Yamaha SLB players to consider an upgrade.

Thank you for the thoughtful comments. I do mean reamping in a traditional way but applied somewhat differently. I want to blend the two mics in post were I can critically listen to the balance without the distraction of playing the instrument. When I have the desired blend, I would then send that recorded signal into the training input of Tonedexter. Having two recorded channels would also allow tweaking the blend for training without having to set up mics, cables & recording gear again, replay the instrument, etc. More efficiency and flexibility is the goal.

not meaning to resurrect an old post in this thread, but wondering if you ever saw this:

I had asked James if I could record on my acoustic and transfer it to my Yamaha SLB200. He sent me a PDF of this. Haven’t tried it yet but it seems promising. I think the idea might work in a way that’s beneficial to you as well.

After owning my TD for a year or two, I finally had a chance to use it as a DI on a recording session the other day, and I thought I'd share this comment from the producer (one of our top jazz guitarists) about the results. If any reader is still sitting on the fence about this one...

"Hi Al
I'm using bass mic and DI together. DI is unreal - best recorded DI sound I have ever heard. Many people would be happy to have a microphone that sounded that good.
I am just using the mic sound to get a certain woody quality and to make the track 'sit' in the room sound of the mix. The main signal is DI."

Tonedexter as DI:

Expensive studio condenser mic (with bleed from drums):

I also have used the Tonedexter in the studio as my direct signal to back up/ compliment the mic. Although little of it made it to the final product, the engineer loved it and ended up buying one for future use.

As someone who uses my Tonedexter for most gigs, and I love it a lot, I'm wondering if anyone has tried this method of training using an eq'd signal from a DAW? I'm going to give it a try.

HELP! My Tonedexter won't power up! It was working perfectly on Sunday, but when I plugged it in today, no lights or power. There doesn't seem to be anything wrong with the adapter. I bought it from Gollihur in October 2018, so I'm hoping if Mark (or James May) is still following this thread, they can point me to the next step - send it in to Gollihur, Audio Sprockets, or a local repair shop? Obviously, I'd like to get it working again ASAP, and also not loose the wave maps I've taken so long to get "perfect" for me. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I love this thing!!

Email James May at [email protected]. I’ve contacted him several times with questions and he always gets back to me the same day!

Sorry to hear this. But yes, contact James - he's the man.

Sold my tonedexter, but just bought a used one so I'm back at it. Regarding firmware updating, my unit is on 1.54, can I just download 1.66 to get my unit up to date? Maybe I need to update incrementally?
You can just download and install the most recent version.
