EditPad Classic (the 'postcardware' version). The new shareware version is a bloat; don't bother. The best Windows alternative to Qedit, if anyone remembers that form the DOS days.

I cannot live without a good text editor.

Aside from many ones already mentioned, I want to add IrfanView and VirtualDub.

IrfanView is a must, it's among the first apps I'll install on any new system. Another great piece of freeware is Opera, a cutting-edge browser. I prefer it to Firefox.

I've dropped AdAware 2007 from my arsenal of tools. This new version runs a service in the background to keep it updated, and it can be a hefty resource hog. Yes, it's true, the one time leader in the Spyware battles now runs constantly in the background.....

I thought XP had a built in Utility, assuming your have burner drive. How did you end up with a burning drive and no software???

Good one. There is also an app called Real Alternative that does the same thing so you don't have to install that horrible RealPlayer app.

I also want to include this cool little program, which is mainly just for looks.

LClock - LClock is a very simple program that makes the Windows' clock look like a Windows Longhorn Clock. LClock also comes with a simple but configurable popup calendar that opens when the systray clock is clicked.

Windows media player can rip audio cd's, I don't know if it can burn data cd's . I had to replace the hard disk.

Highlight the group of data files, right click and choose "Send to" and see if your burner drive is available....select it, if it is, Bob's yer uncle. If it not, see if there's a way to install drivers for your drive?

Looking at the stuff in my Programs menu, I also use "Audiograbber," which is a free CD-ripping program (makes it easy to rip the songs off of your enhanced cds) and also does some file conversion and recording stuff using it's line-in function) (you can set it to record LPs and it automatically splits them into tracks) and other stuff.

There's also "Rename It," which can rename files, either their file names or extensions, in batches. Useful for guys like Maki who want to change the extensions and names of all their porn files to non-searchable or playable file formats and back after each "session"
