Jeff Berlin asks - Why Do Some Object to My Educational Views

I can well understand that things move at a rapid pace sometimes and you can't respond to every idea or counter argument or comment thrown out there. (At least without spending all your time here, and I'm assuming you have a life too.)

I was referring in my own case to a new topic I created which now has over 200 views, but as yet no response by you. It would be more understandable that you didn't have time to respond except that you are quite busy on threads that you created.

You have to decide how to best use your time here, and as I said, you may not have originally envisioned being in a position to answer a lot of questions outside your specific interests in education. I took a chance to give you an opportunity to perhaps turn the heat down and talk about something else you may have a passion for (the music of Jack Bruce). Something that I'd hoped could add a different dimension to your presence here and that we could find more agreement on in a lighter vein.
Pardon me, but I don't know who you are nor am sure how I could have been aware of your comments. How should I know about you? Did you post here? If you wish to review your question, I'll read it and answer it for you. And if there is a place to go where people are more interested into interacting with me please tell me what to do. People seem ticked off over here. I get the feeling that if I say "blue" someone is going to ask me why I dissed "red". :) Thanks for the help.

Really? This is true? You have to be kidding me, right?
Please stop acting like you have been insulated from the stupidity of the internet. This site is a social media site first and foremost...where folks with a common interest tend to gather and kibitz much like any other social media site. It is unattractive for you to act incredulous about something we all know you are well aware of.

Don't try to say that you honestly don't know about the frivolity of discussions that take place here...you are willingly participating in a fruitless discussion as we speak!

Well, I have to say I didn't consider that the reason you haven't responded to several new topics directed to you is because for some reason you simply aren't seeing them! Helping you with a technical issue is beyond me. I'm sure the Admin or someone more knowledgeable than me can direct you.

Do you feel your presence here has that much of an effect on worldwide bass education?
Only a little. Most people seem not to want to embrace learning bass as other instruments are taught, at least from the comments that people on TB have said. This is their choice. But, I have had more people mention that that I had a positive effect on guiding them toward seeking a manner of learning bass where music is the center of their lessons. So, while my influence is minimal here, some people are changing their thoughts about learning.

Ha! Well, I don't believe that I said that I am insulated from internet oddities. I said that I was amazed that a thread where discussing hats was considered important enough to post. I really was interested to know if this was a serious thread of if the poster was just making a joke.

And you are right about some aspects of the internet. Your posts never seemed to be about music or the proper learning of it. You just seem upset with me and prefer to point this out to me. So be it! Believe what you wish. If I see your posts, I won't read them.

This comment will make clear to some why I state that while being back on TB, I don't know my way around. A couple of guys were quick to criticize me about this. I just don't know how to navigate the site and am not sure where to go to join conversations where I might do the most good.

I'm sorry if this looks like I'm stating the obvious but if you click this link, it will take you to your own sub forum "Ask Jeff Berlin". There you should be able to find all topics related to you:

No, this helps a lot. I am not very savvy with on-line things. I didn't know about this! Thank you for the heads-up. Can you tell me where your comments are that I should check out? Thank you again.

Don't provide such practical assistance. I'd rather he get some formal computer education and training before calling himself qualified to give advice here.

Welcome back to the world of internet forums. I am also a member of a prominent audiophile forum, and members there have driven off VERY well known mastering engineers from that site, and it was because members there weren't treating them with respect. This forum is no different as you've seen. Kudos to you for sticking with the educational methods you use and for not leaving here (although I wouldn't blame you if you did leave).
I understood your points right from your first post, and haven't seen you contradict yourself at all. I have a degree in music, and I didn't have any groove classes, was never told to use a metronome (and didn't), and was never given technique lessons unless my instructor saw that I was playing in a way that was detrimental to my health (likely to cause back, wrist, or other problems). I did learn some slap exercises, but it was because the other two professors grading me at the end of each semester were guitar players, and they were super impressed by slap etudes for some reason, and gave me a better grade as a result. That was a fault with the judgement of the guitar professors and not my teacher. Every other class I took was related to learning music theory as it relates to classical music, and then jazz.

Anyway, hang in there, and use the ignore button if you have to. It helps!

So, a professional bass player has to have practical computer experience in order to post here about bass education? That makes no sense. Jeff is here trying to help bassists learn, but he himself shouldn't get any practical assistance?

So if one tries to take a "piece by piece" or random method to learn bass, it becomes complicated, because without a musical framework, you hit the wall. The light bulb never goes off. Starting simply and progressing musically cuts through the clutter that the imagination creates and causes one to end up posting very complicated, academic mind bleed posts about learning. Since notes have specific vibrations per second, and scales and intervals are mathematical fractions, I just don't see how analogies about golf, swimming and other stuff relates. I once read that Bach was a mathematician.

This guy knows all there is to know about bad internet behaviour...this is his third attempt here and it's obvious that he's learned nothing as it seems to be headed in quite the same direction. I really am genuinely surprised, as harsh as his prior run-ins have been, that he would even bother with this site at all. I think he is simply trolling and fully expects to run himself right into another ban.

Learning is different than playing.

Learning might be viewed as an out of time regard and review of new musical information.

Playing can be seen as a spontaneous performance of one's musical capability up to that point.

I feel that if people see the differences, then they might see what they can or should do about each one to extract the best benefits out of them.

Jeff has already explained going through therapy to better himself. I admire him for saying so publicly. I'm also quite sure that he has better things to do than troll this place. I actually haven't seen one post he's made this time around that would constitute trolling. I've definitely seen other members troll him, though. If you can go to one of his clinics at some point, you'll figure out that he's a nice guy with the best intentions. I've interacted with Jeff online and in person over the course of 20 years, and he has never said anything that I find offensive.

As to the question originally posted by Jeff, the most obvious answer is “who cares?”. You can’t please / convince everyone. Some folks love to argue, some folks are coming to this thread to see if the past is repeated, some folks don’t want to hear that there might be a better way to improve on the instrument.
You are right! Well, if people wish to try and relate with me, I'd be pleased to respond in kind. :)
