NAD: QSC has killed my need for bass amps

Quoting myself here to see if anyone has any feedback. Trying to decide between the k and the CP at the moment

I’m using a standard instrument cable from my noble into the K12.2, so TS.

I think if you change the settings on the speaker (mic/line level) I think you can use a TRS, but I don’t know if you need that.

Had an interesting experience this past weekend. I was doing a rock gig with bass, drums, tele thru a loud Fender amp, and keys through loud, onstage amps (two!). I decided to use my IEMs to protect my ears. I took a tap off a stage monitor, but quickly realized that I would not have bass in my mix. So I ran ti my car, and got my EV Everse8 powered monitor. Like many similar speakers, it has a built-in mixer. I daisy-chained an XLR from a nearby floor wedge into channel 1, and then took the tuner-out from my GK MB500 into channel 2. Then I took another XLR cable, and connected the Everse8 XLR output to my IEMs. Using the bluetooth app, I had no trouble dialing in a perfect mixing of the house monitor mix, and my bass. And because I wanted to get a feel for how loud monitor itself was, I temporally unplugged my 2x10 bass cabinet. To get the low end I want ti hear in my IEMs, I also dialed up the low end on the channel that my bass was plugged into. I've used the Everse8 on many songwriter-oriented shows, but never with a rock band. I was basically using it as a mixer for my IEMs, but I have to say it sounded pretty great. I put my IEMs back in, and did the gig.

When we were done, I went to pack up my gear, and discovered that I had forgotten to plug my bass cabinet back into my GK head! I did the whole gig with no working bass cabinet in stage. Of course I had IEMs, so I can see how I might have missed that, though super-surprised I was. But what was more amazing, is that nobody in the band knew, and neither did the sound guy. That's how well that little monitor did.

If one is running a pre to the QSC (Noble in my case), would a TRS cable be used or would a TS work between the pre and QSC? I would run the DI from the Noble to the main PA and 1/4 out to the QSC

Just saw your question didn’t get answered. TS cable from the Noble to the QSC.

Just note for comparison sake that powered cabinets are rated very differently.

While most better quality bass amps are rated in power based on RMS metrics. Powered speakers typically use “peak” power which is numerically twice the RMS value. Additionally, while the tweeter may only handle 25 watts, the amp that powers them may be rated much higher and then limited down to 25 or 50 watts. The marketing folks use the peak value of the unlimited power.

As a general rule, the effective RMS value compared to a bass amp is typically around 1/4 of the marketing value.

To chime in with that, I would say that my QSC k12.2 (2000 Watts) is about as effective as my TH500 (500 Watts) and db112 were together.

Yes, very misleading.
Not unlike Behringer or Bugera...if I were to name just a couple of names.

The word “peak” in the QSC marketing material is irritating. Nowhere do I see the RMS stats. The CP12 (which I just bought but haven’t had the time to play through yet) has 1000 watts peak. I assumed 500 RMS, but with the tweeter, I’m guessing it’s more like 300 going to the 12”? I’m not an expert on 12’s, but I would think the max one can take is 200-300 watts??

I think what would be nice is actual bass amp mfg’s create a floor wedge style amp. Mesa, Aguilar, Ampeg, etc. A neo 15 and a 500 watt class D amp tucked in a wedge.

+1 on the Behringer. I have a cheaper 12” wedge monitor Behringer that is so quiet it’s useless. I need to look at the watts or I guess I should say peak ratings of that wedge but I want to say it’s like 150. Sounds like a 30 watt bass amp or less.

Ashdown has a 112. GK used to do it. Markbass had a 2x10.
