What are your favorite basses that you got for $700 or less?

may have to get a black pearloid some day
Get the black one, you'll be glad you did. I have a midnight wine jazz MIM just like yours (2005). Did the same as you and put a pearloid guard on it. It just never worked for me. Put a black guard on it, and it is one of the best color combinations I've seen.

Have you guys checked out Greasy Grooves? They have a lot of nice pickguards.

I got these for a "strat":
Liberty 2 Graphical Fender Stratocaster SSS 11 hole, Graphical
We the People Graphical Strat Tremolo Cover, Graphical

cool , got a pic?
Not mine, but looks identical to mine (Google search). I never really cared for the midnight wine until I got the black pickguard. Got he idea from TBer BassAgent. He has a USA made Jazz with this color scheme. You can probably find his with a search.

Edit: I just realized that you said black pearloid. As you can see, mine is a 3-ply b-w-b. I could never warm up to the pearloid. It reminds me too much of lace. Trust me, the b-w-b will make the midnight wine pop.

Earlier this year I picked up a couple of basses I really love for way less than $700.
The one on the left is a Schecter 004 that is in like new condition. Bought it from a guitar player who thought he wanted to play bass. Said he only played it maybe 10 hours total. Still had the original GC receipt for the bass and case, which cost him almost $700. I got it for $280!
The one on the right is a '95 Carvin Bunny Brunel, which is also in great shape. It may be my all time favorite bass for comfort, ease of playing and tone. Came with the original case for $300!

I'm impossibly hidebound when it comes to stringed instruments (yes, a big Fender designed fan), but boy oh boy, loves me that Schecter. I like their Stargazer too. I think they may have at one time produced a leftie. I remember seeing a demo of one on youtube from one of those British mega music stores (not Anderton's, though).

Like the look of that one.

I mention that place because they have a ton of graphical pick gaurds as well as the usual stuff, and custom.

WD Music also sells graphic-pickguards for various guitars and basses. If I wanted to get one for an odd bass like my Blacktop Jazz (Jazz guard with a P-pup route), I'd probably go there first.

If I wanted to get one with a material that's more "exotic", I'd probably hit up Terrapin Guitars. They even sent me a handful of sample pieces for something like $5, so I could see what they'd look like in real-life.

I kind of cheated with my fav, I used to work for a company that sold Fender products, so I was able to get my CIJ Geddy Lee Jazz for cost, well under $700. And this was after their retail price hike.

Under $700? My Breedlove Atlas..

I got a Heir here for under $700 as well but I dropped quite a bit into it in fretwork and electronics so if that qualifies that would be my electric.. and now I would be very hard pressed to sell it..

I had this fretless bass ukulele made by Bruce Wei Arts out of Vietnam for $480 including shipping. All solid acacia koa, plus I had him extend the fretboard around the soundhole for thumbrests. I added a preamp/tuner and piezo under saddle pickup (which needs to be better balanced), Kala metal wound nylon core strings, and had Jeff at Guitar Center WLA add the Gotoh tuning machines. It's now my go to bass for gigs with The CC Strummers ukulele group because it sounds really good and fits in so well.

Gotta be my G&L USA SB-2, which I bought new at a guitar show in 2007. It was priced at $900, and the shop gave me $350 in credit for a beat-up 1981 Ibanez guitar. The guitar wasn't worth that much, so I felt like I freakin' stole this SB-2, and it's a phenomenal bass.

If that doesn't count as $700 or less, I scored a brand new 2004 Am. Series Precision for exactly $700, which was also a steal. Normal street price was about $900 at the time.

My current favorite lower cost basses are my late 50's Kay Truetone I bought over 20 years ago for $75, my early '60s Silvertone/Danelectro 1444 "dolphin nose" I bought in the mid '80s for $25 at a yard sale, and my transparent black Hofner Icon Club bass I bought new on eBay when they were first released about 5 years ago (#2 of 40) but I don't remember xactly how much I paid for it but I think it was about $300.
