Thanks, actually a bit of both. It's from a kit off e-bay with a few cosmetic upgrades. I asked the vendor to send me their best matching body, and was lucky enough to get one with three reasonably matching pieces and all had nice flame or sparkle to them.
2010 Squier VM P with a Matt Freeman neck and an EMG GZR pickup. about 280 bucks for the bass and about 200 for the mods, it's an awesome playing, sounding, and looking bass, it's my favorite bass, even over my '08 MIA Fender Jazz
Get the black one, you'll be glad you did. I have a midnight wine jazz MIM just like yours (2005). Did the same as you and put a pearloid guard on it. It just never worked for me. Put a black guard on it, and it is one of the best color combinations I've seen.2 years ago, this 2004/05 MIM Jazz: $250
I swapped in the pearloid P/G from a plain slightly scratched up white one.....may have to get a black pearloid some day

Earlier this year I picked up a couple of basses I really love for way less than $700.
The one on the left is a Schecter 004 that is in like new condition. Bought it from a guitar player who thought he wanted to play bass. Said he only played it maybe 10 hours total. Still had the original GC receipt for the bass and case, which cost him almost $700. I got it for $280!
The one on the right is a '95 Carvin Bunny Brunel, which is also in great shape. It may be my all time favorite bass for comfort, ease of playing and tone. Came with the original case for $300!

When I was a kid, my local music store had a brand new ric 4000 series bass for $550 (don't remember exactly which model). I had $500 saved up. I said to myself, "Why bother, I play guitar and not so great." Regrets happen.
Do people actually pay over $700 for a bass? 1962 Fender Jazz - $75; 1995 Fender USA Precision - $475; 2005 MIM Jazz - $275; Squier P unknown vintage - $75. I guess if I had to pick a favorite it would probably be the '62.
